Q&A For Computer File Recovery
Saturday, February 27, 2010

Q: What is computer file recovery?

A: It is titled, data recovery. Data recovery salvages information from failed, corrupted, or damaged hard disk drives, CDs, and various other electronics. Data recovery is also the course of action taken to retrieve and secure information from storage media for the purposes of spying such as in spy ware.

Q:  What can I do to prevent losing data again?

A: Back up your hard drive on to a CD, DVD or an external drive as much as possible. Not only does this keep your information, pictures, and business documents safe, but then it will travel with you anywhere and is easily accessible.

Just a note: We live in an age of electrical data consumption by end users. End users collect data for commercial and sometimes personal use. Along with that comes the risk of computer viruses, trojan attacks, or corrupted files making your data inaccessible. Because so much of this is out of your control, there are several companies whose job it is to retrieve your lost or corrupted files.

Q:  Can I retrieve information I need from my recycle bin?

A:  Absolutely. Go to your recycle bin icon on your desk top and right click. Select file or folder and then click restore. If you emptied your recycle bin recently you will need third-party software specializing in data retrieval.

Q: I have a new computer but I need to recover data from a crashed computer. How do I accomplish that?

A: Use a third party software data retrieval CD. Or, you may remove the hard drive from your crashed computer and get an adapter to hook up to the other computer as an external drive.

Q: Due to a power outage my computer failed. I can't find the business template I was working on. What can I do?

A: This is what is called logical damage. You may have to repeat your work, but first, run your de-fragment and disk check-up program. Continue to do this on a regular basis and it will help your computer to keep from defragmenting information you have not saved during a power outage. Also, a backup power system may be necsassary.

File Recovery Formatted OS - Can You Recover Files From a Formatted Hard Drive?

Looking to recover files from a formatted OS? Well you may be in luck. Most folks think that after they format a hard drive, any information not backed up is lost forever. Simply put, this is not necessarily true. There is a possibility you can restore lost data from your freshly formatted hard drive. But you need to act quickly.

When you format your hard drive, although your memory appears to be erased, many of the files and programs remain intact. In reality what has been erased are the specific entries for the files. The files can remain on the drive but any way of accessing them traditionally has been removed.

All new files or programs you install will simply overwrite the old data. There is no way of knowing what will be overwritten or when, but any data left over from the formatted drive can be permanently erased at any time.

This is why I say to act quickly. If you have important data that you forgot to back up you need to extract that information before it can be overwritten.

File Recovery Formatted OS

The answer is YES, you can recover files from a formatted hard drive. There is no 100% guarantee but you certainly have a shot at it. What you need to do is scan your computer with specialized data recovery software.

The best file recovery software can reach the lower levels of your hard drive and pull out the formatted data. This includes music, multimedia, word documents, photos, and just about any kind of file on your system. You can scan your computer and preview each individual file before you recover them.

Looking to recover files from a damaged or formatted hard drive? Don't panic, you may be able to retrieve that lost data. Simply scan your computer for free with the best file recovery software on the net. The sooner you act, the better your chances of recovery are.

File Recovery For Inaccessible Files on NTFS Partition
Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Under certain situations where you can not read, write, delete, copy or move files from/to an NTFS (New Technology File System) file system partitions. This behavior of Windows computer might make your critical files inaccessible and cause serious file loss. In such situations, File Recovery solutions are required to resolve the issue.

Grounds of the issue:
There could be several reasons of this problem. The major ones among them are as follows:

The files use ACL: You may not be able to perform any operation on the files if they are using ACL (Access Control List). To solve this problem, change the permissions of the files by taking ownership of files. If the file is using non-canonical ACL, then you can't use some security tools for showing or changing permissions.

File path issue: If the files exist in the paths, which are deeper than MAX_PATH characters. In case of file path issue, the files become completely inaccessible and unusable.

File names contains reserved name: If the name of the files contain reserved names in Win32 name space, you may face this situation. To resolve this issue, use a non-Win32 tool for renaming the file.

File names include invalid name: If the files have invalid names in Win32 name space, you might encounter this behavior of Microsoft Windows.

File system corruption: This problem may also occur due to corruption of the file system. Due to file system corruption, operating system can not locate the files and thus the files become inaccessible. Such behavior causes file loss scenarios.

In such situations, you need to format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system to fix the issue. In such cases, formatting a disk is capable of sorting out all the disk related logical issues. But, it also has a disadvantage as it removes all the files from the hard drive and causes serious file loss.

Under such scenarios, quality File Recovery Software can recover files the lost data. These are robust third party tools that can thoroughly scan the whole hard drive and extract all data from it. File Recovery using such software is fairly easy and safe due to their read-only and non destructive nature.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the most comprehensive and powerful File Recovery Software. It can recover data from FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file system partitions and volumes. The software is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 (currently in RC1), Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000.

Computer File Recovery
Thursday, February 11, 2010

Having a Macintosh at home is a life saver. I can't tell you how many times I've actually misplaced something on my computer. Thrown it away, put it in another folder, changed permissions, you name it, I've done it, and with a Macintosh it's incredibly easy to get everything back to order especially with Apple's Time Machine built right in. But my buddies have a PC and anyone can tell you if you mess something up on a PC get ready to spend hours trying to fix the problem. It's a headache to say the least. I've been there and so have many others. I'm writing this because it's down right frustrating when something goes missing on a PC and you can't find it. Anything could of happened.

You could of installed a program and that program somehow deleted your file, or moved it. You could of been surfing the internet and somehow downloaded a virus, worm or any malicious program that could of took it upon itself to delete files. But, sadly, the overall reason why files go missing is quite simply human error. In our mad rush to clear the desktop or in a our attempt to be a speed clicker we inadvertently throw the file away and we do it without a backup. In a Mac I would just open up Time Machine and get it back. In a PC it's not so easy. Unless you have a program already installed on your computer ready for such a thing and here's why.

When you delete a file it's actually still on your computer, it's just invisible. It doesn't really get deleted until it's overwritten by something else you may do on your computer. Such as creating a new file, installing a new program, even browsing the internet and creating a history of your past visited sites. So right now, you know your file is missing. You need to get it back. You need to do as little work on your computer as possible so as to NOT overwrite anything you can't see. Here's how to do it.

1) You could take a risk and download a program that can recovery files, but like I said, it's a chance because you could overwrite the file you're trying to recover.

2) If you have a laptop, it could be as simple as hooking your computer up to another computer using USB, Bluetooth, or Firewire. This is great option if you don't have a computer file recovery program on your computer. When you hook up to another computer you're actually just making your computer an external hard drive to the computer you are hooking up to. Then it's as simple as taking the computer you're hooked up to and either getting the file recovery software and installing it on that computer, or using that computers file recovery program if they have one. Both solutions will work and will not write anything to your computer because it's actually just an external hard drive. Then just use the software, direct it to look on the external hard drive (the computer the file is missing from) and hopefully you will find it. There's a good chance you will if you just accidentally deleted the file.

3) There's a third option. Some companies sell programs that will allow you create a emergency startup disk with their file recovery program software on it. When you do this, and sometime in the future when you realize you just lost a file. Simply restart your computer with the start up disk in it and once it loads up, use the software on the disk to find your missing file.

With all that being said, and the main reason I'm writing this, is to tell people BACK UP your files. At least the important ones. ALWAYS back up. It will save you so much frustration in the future.
